My friends son wants a monitor to replace his TV.

He plays FPS and has a budget of under £200.

What is a good buy at the moment?

Does he hate himself? If not, tell him to save more money.

When did £200 become not a lot of money?

Plus a lecture about how in my day TVs were black and white and square and only had aerial input and mono sound and you had to share with everyone and if Mam wanted to watch Corrie you had to stop and....

Kovs - ask the lad what graphics card he has, no point speccing a monitor he can't run. Once I know that I will know a suitable resolution and that will make it much easier.

Just had a look on Ebuyer, you can get a decent, branded, 24 inch monitor 1920x1080 with HDMI for around the £100 mark.

I wouldn't spend more than this on a monitor that's being used for basic gaming and other such duties.

If he really wants 144hz then you're straight up at £200 though.

What about those motion-blur-reducing things where the GPU puts out some sane framerate and the monitor puts black frames between each frame? My TV does that and I thought some monitors and/or graphics cards could too.
