I'd like a Facebook page for the Grimlet, purely because I'm starting to upload pictures of him, and I'd like to tag them - trying to do them retroactively when he starts his own Facebook account would be a nightmare.

But I'm not sure if it would be "weird".

It would be weird. Don't forget that when he does get his 'own' facebook account, probably the last thing he's going to want on there right from the off is loads of photos of him with mum and dad.

That's the other reason I want to do it. Fuck future him ;)

I don't think it's that weird, it could be the modern day equivalent of a journal of his life that you hand over when he is 18. I think it would be a nice thing to hand over and let him decide what he wanted to do with it.
It doesn't need to be open to anyone else to see, you can make totally private pages can't you? Or can you? Not sure what would happen if you tagged a private person in a picture, would others see that? Hmmm....

I'd probably let him make up his own mind what he wants on there, to be honest.

I'm with Silent elk on this one. How appreciative would you have been if your parents set you up a Lycos account or a Myspace page?

I think you can still make a closed group that only invited members can see. Been years since I tried that though.
Not sure about tagging - might depend on their settings.

Thing is, he doesn't have to use the same one.

If you set up the account and set it in his account so that all pictures featuring him are private or whatever?

When tagging, can't you put in a name, even if it doesn't resolve to an account?

Also, it's weird.
;)

Yes, we'd have it entirely hidden from the outside world, and send out requests from the account to family members.
And yes, but then it doesn't ping my missus or the grandparents, which I it would if they were "his" friends.

The way other people seem to deal with the latter problem is to tag the child with their own name, which is, of course, stupid.

Don't forget there are specific FB things in place for kids - I don't think their stuff can be seen by adults who aren't family, for example.

If all you're currently interested in doing is sharing pictures can't you just make a profile with completely fake details that's locked down to whatever level is appropriate and friend the various relatives to it (obviously letting them know in advance what the plan is)? That way they get the pictures when you upload them but nothing is searchable under real names. If he wants to set up a real Facebook page when he's older you can then do that properly and all the old stuff is still there under the fake name if anyone wants it. Disclaimer: I don't know what tagging pictures does for you on Facebook so have no idea if this is losing you something you'd get by using a real name.

I'm not keen, I agree it's annoying that you can't tag your child without them having an account and I wish they would change that, but making her a page of her own, nah
doesn't help that the one example I know (and you know as well) have done it in a very public way and weirds me out a bit
