Well my, it is nice to be recognised completely out of the blue like that! You are a gentleman and no mistake. I'll take a slow comfortable screw.

So what is the deal with this establishment? When does the music start?

<Fixes her Maroon Lipstick, then removes a cigarette>

Anyone got a light?

The music has already started, sweet-cheeks, though you wouldn't know it from the other amateurs in this band...

*plays bass impressively*

*I left the precinct and spat on the sidewalk. Those damn pigs were as greasy as Jimmy the snake but without the cajones to be upfront about it, and dealing with them left a foul taste in my mouth. After I'd been told about the latest case I'd drawn the short straw and been sent down here to see what I could find out about this dead Joe.
But this time, none of those damn cops were talking and as I pulled my jacket tighter against the rain I couldn't help but wonder what this dame was involved in.
I headed for the jazz club, knowing that he'd be there but so would any number of red lipped, pink cheeked little cuties with voices like honey and eyelashes that just couldn't help but flutter in my direction. Sure, I'd work the case, but a man needs to relax as well and i was sure I could find some hot little gal to help me do just that.
I arrived at the club, the smell of smoke and whisky as welcoming as the sounds of the house band getting their rhythm.*
"hey, I brought you some more smokes". I dropped them on the table where he was sitting eyeing up the patrons, his gaze lingering a little longer on the vamp on vocals.
I signalled to the barman "I'll have a double scotch on the rocks" and leaned back against the bar to survey the room.
It was a mixed crowd. A lot of strange people, trying to show the world how much fun they were having while they hid their secrets in their liquor glass.
I couldn't get a read on any of them and I glanced at my partner to see if he was doing any better.

Sorry to disappoint but I'm nothing worth lynching, I was obviously dreaming with my doorman role. Woke up & and realised my mistake thus I'm now back to my cleaning job.

This gospvg guy was a card and no mistake. He was talking about his two jobs like that proves he's an honest Joe, salt of the earth, working class family man typa guy. I wasn't buying it. Why would someone like that be working in a place like this and with so many seedy people about he was making a lotta noise. I decided to rattle his cage and see what fell out.

What kind of unfriendly joint is this that when a guy walks in and tells you he's having an awful day and orders an entire bottle and a short glass that the barman does not even ask him to spill his troubles?

Next time I'll go to that other bar. Where everybody knows your name. And you're always glad you came.

Why, hell boy! I'm just a movie producer trying to have a nice drink and admiring my well shined shoes.

I'll have an Amaretto sour, Sam, but I am bit confused if I have to pay for it. Seems to be a number of people claiming to run this joint, someone trying to hussle in? Possible running a racket of some description?

See now earlier you were throwing your weight around like you were the man running the place. Interesting. So who is the gaffer? Turns out I found a couple of cases of the good stuff that had fallen off the back of a lorry somewhere. Did my neighbourly duty and cleared up of course, and it strikes me that they could use a good home.

A mistake on my part by playing the role of a doorman & later realising that mistake & correcting myself to my correct role of a boring old cleaner :(

I guess with time going so quickly, we need to point the finger at who to hand over to the cops.

Therein lies the problem though, if the people in the bar are quiet, there isn't anything to look at.

I squinted at the movie producer, Bobby he said his name was. He thought bad guys drank a lot? Man, he should spend some time in our office. Show us a bottle of jack and we'll be leaning back in our chairs and lighting a smoke quicker than you could say 'let's go to the talkies'
We weren't bad guys, just needed some way to numb ourselves from all the scum we had to deal with on a daily basis.
Sometimes I wondered why I'd agreed to that first job investigating a guy who'd upped sticks and left his wife alone and pennyless, their savings account emptied. But I knew why. He made sure he had brought her along when he asked me to work with him cos he knew I was a sucker for a pretty face. Just like he knew she'd be a sucker for my charms. Sure enough, I got her in my bed and it was what he had been planning all along. He grabbed the chance to search her apartment and found the evidence he needed to get her for murder and there you go, my first case and we'd found a suppossed helpless woman covering up murder.
But that was five years ago and I was hooked. I couldn't quit now and to tell to the truth, I didn't want to.

Hey buddy, I don't mind talking...in fact I love talking. I just get suspicious when I see a guy acting so weird when he knows there's something going down. You gave two different answers to what your job was and as far as I saw no one was even asking the question. Your shakier than a hobo on a cold night in cheap street.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat and went to the bar for another whisky. The cops needed a name by 2pm but hardly anyone was talking. There were people who knew stuff, more than me at least, I could see it in their eyes and the way they gazed into their glass while trying to scope out everyone else. Their game was obvious. Lay low and let us do all the legwork. I frowned suspiciously at everyone yet to suggest a name. I'd keep an eye on them.
For a moment, I wished I carried a tommy gun but as quick as it came I pushed the thought away. I wasn't a fighter, I was a lover. But man, I was nervous. It felt like everyone in this room could be a cold blooded killer.

I took another pull on my drink and sank back into the corner.
Who was I? That's not important, i've been in many bars like this. Some people call me the narrator, some the games master, others just call me "that guy in the corner".

Whatever I am, I'm just a guy who watches.

Watching dames squabble over guys, drunks hunt for that last copper to get their last fix of the night. The desperate searching for their future, and the desperate searching for their past.

Gospvg was one of those, a past seeker, glory days behind her, just earning an honest living and thinking about the past. Gospvg was just a Townie she didn't deserve to be bundled off to the big house…
