I don't know if it was because I was tired, but the demo made no sense to me and seemed rather complicated.

you have to fill in train routes with cards you draw of the same color, so e.g. salt lake, calgary is 4 red dots until a city in between and then 5 blue dots, and so you need 4 red cards and 5 blue to fill in, larger routes mean more opportunities to block..
