Sorry if this has already been done but a search for 'damnyou' revealed no matches.

http://damnyouautocorrect.com/10123/the ... june-2011/

http://damnyouautocorrect.com/

The 'best of' monthly compilations are the cream of the crop, but TBH most of them are funny.

Had me and a few colleagues in tears of laughter, although a couple of folks completely failed to be be amused.

They can be funny, but unfortunately 90% of them on that site are fake.

Yeah I figured that, but still, worth a giggle.

Also, I've not found any definitive proof it's fake, lots of speculation out there, but I can't see it actually get nailed down anywhere as definitely being fake.

Well, for starters, there aren't any rude words in the iPhone autocorrect dictionary. The ones that are believable are the ones where it's a pronoun or something that's wrong, which makes it rude.

It can add rude words, right?

Yeah, but if you add a load of swear words to the autocorrect dictionary manually, you're a dumb fuck.

Haven't had an iPhone since the 3G, but IIRC it does add stuff to its dictionary as you 'approve' words and it can then auto-fill and predict so you only type a few letters and it'll do a whole word?

Can't remember TBH and I turned all that shit off, same as I have on my HTC Desire, I just want it to use a custom dictionary and I'm happy.

However, there are a few common threads across the damnyouautocorrect site, similar words keep cropping up with similar replacements.

I'm not saying some or indeed many of them aren't fake, but I've yet to find any decisive evidence as to what proportion that may be.

You'd have to deliberately add them in. Not even sure you can do that with some words. Getting it to stop autocorrecting fuck to duck was pretty much impossible.

So - a pic on that site with 'fancy a duck?' would be pretty accurate, I reckon :p

My phone has just about every swear word in the world in its dictionary, all your basics plus a lot of 'custom swears' such as cuntbubble, titface, fuckrag etc.

I don't want to have to teach it the word 'motherfucker' every time I need to use it.

It's obviously full of fakes. Quite apart from the obvious dictionary things, there are so many stilted, unnatural conversations in there, and they're always so well self-contained. No two random texts would be that comprehensible out of context.

Cute idea though.

It's still not proof though, man.

There are hundreds of millions of English language speakers sending billions of texts per day - it's a big world, y'know? I've done a bit of Googling on the site, and apart from people saying 'well it's obviously fake', there's really no proof.

OK - if you add them in and then are surprised when it starts suggesting sex acts to your mother, you're a dumb fuck ;)

And all of them read one website? Come on. It's not the rarity - it's the setup. It just reeks of deliberate writing. Some of them are still very good, yeah, but a lot of them fall flat for it.

A large part of my job is documentation, technical standards, organisation reference materials, ISO accreditation and all that stuff.

I'm generally a pretty reliable proof-reader, including of my own texts :p

I take your point, but it's still just speculation, innit?

Out of hundreds of millions of texters per day, how many need to be aware of a website like that to make it viable?

Look at this way: it's a famous website. It can't run any sort of fact checking on submissions. People like having their stuff on famous websites. Ergo, even if it was 100% genuine at first, it's mostly (or entirely) fakes today.

I used to do something called "IRC Llama of the day" on one of the websites I used to run, and it would be me picking up on things like that in IRC (as well as innuendo and stuff like in beex week). We allowed people to submit their own entries (I and others would vet them) and it became increasingly apparent that people were deliberatly saying stuff to get on that, and that was a small website covering a small sector (people who played quake 3 online and used about one of a dozen or so channels on quakenet) of a niche game. So, I would also expect a large portion of that website to be faked.

My best ever auto-correct had my phone turn my attempt at typing Manchester into ‘man homosexual’. I can't even remotely reproduce that wonderful little mistake.

Of course, I didn't send it, because I'm not a moron.

Anecdotal evidence.

Wouldn't stand up in court man.

(I'm not actually disagreeing with you or DocG or anyone else, I suspect chunks of that site are faked - but I'd be interested to know how much, since when, and which are the genuine ones.)

Everything's fake, especially on the internet. Don't worry about it.

I propose a mission to get a fake conversation on the site. If any one Beexer has their submission posted, then that proves that the website isn't 100% legitimate.

I also have a lust of wool for a knitting friend.

If I type LOST, however, it comes out as LIST.

My worst mistake was when I typed FAGWAD when trying to say FATHER.

Actually, no, there was once one worse than that, but I am actually too embarassed to type it.

I do not use auto-correct or predictive text. I carefully spell out every message with appropriate grammer and correct punctuation. This does mean it takes me thrice as long to text, for thrice the price too, but I believe it is the RIGHT THING TO DO.

I like the way that the daily mail has picked some of the more likely fake ones.

I'm still upset that the best genuine autocorrect error I've ever seen in the wild was edited out. Mind you, given the mood and accusations around here recently, it is probably a good thing.

I have no problem with fake things being passed off as real (mockumentaries, fake news websites, Top Gear, etc). If something is funny, engaging or it suspends my disbelief I can happily go along with it for the sake of entertainment.

A website of images of stilted text conversations with obvious 'reverse typos' in is none of those things, IMO. Obviously you find it hilarious though, so all power to you. ;)

For a man who's so keen on his evidence Doc, I still ain't seen you come up with any for damnyouautocorrect being fake.

http://damnyouautocorrect.com/10785/dam ... questions/

Q: That entry is totally fake. It doesn’t autocorrect to that on my phone!

A: Autocorrect behaves differently on everyone’s phone, and it “learns” words based on things you have typed in the past. If you can’t reproduce it on your phone after numerous tries, it doesn’t mean it is fake. It just means you have too much time on your hands.

Q: But the keystrokes aren’t even near each other! It’s fake!

A: Proximity of the keys has absolutely nothing to do with how Autocorrect works. It’s based on a complex formula of algorithms and keystrokes, and it was created by elves who work tirelessly day and night in their treehouses in an effort to embarrass you by having your phone insert the word “penis” into as many conversations as possible. Sometimes you meant to write penis. Often times, you didn’t. But that’s not the point. The point is: Less analyzing. More laughing. And leave the “FAKE” comments where they belong – in the comments section under reblogged photos of Pam Anderson’s boobs.

Doc G is not really a Doc he is a 67 year old retired thimble maker from Bridlington who is hard wired in to Wikipedia.

I'm not sure that the FAQ On the same website is conclusive independent evidence either ;-)

Doubtless some are true. But quite a few just don't work contextually for the 'intended' statement and appear to be pure comedy crowbars.

I'm not denying that, I'm just saying that generally speaking DocG will smack you in the face with facts until your cheeks are bleeding, and is particularly scathing of anecdotes and opinions being presented as facts, except when he's doing it ;)

There is no conclusive evidence that damnyouautocorrect is 'mostly or entirely fake', which is what DocG asserted on page one of this thread.

There's no conclusive proof it's true either, unless you believe their own FAQ or the Daily Mail, apparently.

It easier to deal with in real life to be honest. Largely because it is scientifically harder to hear things that happen at lower altitudes to the listener.

No no, I'm not asserting it's genuine or fake, I'm simply saying there's no proof one way or the other.

DocG has stated that it's 'mostly or entirely fake', based on nothing more than he thinks that's likely to be the case.
