Unfortunately, it appears as if the v2.40 update wasn't available for long. A rash of complaints on the official PlayStation message boards claim the heavily anticipated update caused many PS3s to lock up when owners attempt to load a game. The problem does not appear to be exclusive to an individual hardware model, as owners of 40GB, 60GB, and 80GB consoles have all reported problems.

Anyone here had any problems?

ANY game? How did that make it through testing?

No, although this explains why it wasn't there when I tried to reflash my PS3 last night. Early reports are that it doesn't seem to effect one particularly model of PS3; my guess is it'll be tied into some data on the hard disk, e.g. it bricks PS3s that have a particular games saves or something. Otherwise it's hard to see how it passed QA, as Sheepeh said.

No, that would require turning it on.

I accepted your PS3 friend request last night. It seemed to have been sent in May!

They probably didn't factor it into the testing that anyone would actually try to use their PS3s for games.

I did the update and it seems to be working fine. That said, all I've done with it since is loaded up GT5 to the title screen, watched a BluRay filum and had a quick go on Super Stardust HD to see how the Achievements - sorry, I mean 'Trophies' - work. It did, strangely enough, crash whilst updating to the new version of Stardust HD, but rebooted and then proceeded to update fine.

In fairness, I've been on there several times since then. I must have just not ventured down into the Friends list bit.

I have AVI streaming from my NAS to the PS3 working fine now, so I suspect the PS3 will be getting much more use soon, particularly once the new US TV season starts up.

Not so much, no. Although I will return to GT5P at some point.

I think I use mine more than you do and I spend nowhere near as much time defending it as you do. Take that out of context, damn you :DD

No problems here, used it for a bit of media streaming last night, letting a friend finish Uncharted and a couple of games on Motorstorm.

Also my PS3 is getting plenty of use at the moment, I tend to alternate quite equally between it and the 360

Worst bit of the game, I thought. Disappointing, too, since it left me with such a sour taste that I've not played it again since, and it's by no means a bad game otherwise.

Incidentally, I've been playing Battlefield: Bad Company lately. Thoughts will follow over the weekend, but a few hours in, the verdict is "quite fun so far."

Woo!

This bloody place is way too busy! I'm trying to find a way to jump back in but it feels like:

Nudge Gamble Ph33r. When you have a nudge - or other - gamble on a fruit machine and you don't press it straight away so you end up been unable to press the button because you can't get the timing right.

But! the lights keep flashing, and the noise keeps going but you still feel like Gareth Gates trying to get a word out.

And when you do eventually press the button, you lose.
