My brother earns £3208.33 a month before tax. He pays £551.00 PAYE, and £303.05 NI. That's the 40% bracket. Is that right?
He's got no other income.

Jeeeez, I'd forgotten how shitty NI is if you are an employee.

But yeah, I think that's 40% (depending in what the allowances are these days).

The PAYE seems a tiny bit low, and the NI seems a tiny bit high, at least according to this:

http://www.freelanceuk.com/money/paye_calculator.php

That said, it asked for atax code and I didn't know, so left it with the default one, which might be wrong.

*shrugs*

This place suggests he's about right, and they've always been OK for me.

But on the plus side, he is nearly 9 quid a month better off than last year!

It looks in the right ballpark, but again the PAYE looks a little low.

I can't imagine how he copes with only £2352 per month. Shocking.

Sitll, ask him to make sure his taxi codes are correct.

Would a photocopied parking permit help?

Exactly correct, according to the ever-lovely Listen To Tax Man.

I'm sure DBSnappa will be along presently to (again) express the opinion that PAYE screws you over.

Gordon has to get his money somewhere... when he's not stealing it from your pension fund or selling off our gold reserves at the very bottom of the market.

I wasn't "in" the tax system until last year.
I'd been paying PAYE and NI since I started working like 8 years ago, but it turned out they had no record of me whatsoever when I asked to do a self-assessment (cos of being a company director).

Took a few months to sort out, fortunately they decided I'd been paying the right amounts all along, and then when I did a tax return it came out 0.21 pounds higher than what I'd paid that year (almost certainly down to rounding errors), so they told me not to do one again 8)
