I would really like something like this

Image

but a bit less spendy (that's $120! Stupid handmade-in-America premium stuff) and a bit more available in the UK. I'm having trouble finding anything though -- even Amazon only seem to have a few of them, and most of them are for digital cameras. Googling mostly turns up two-strap backpacks. Can anyone suggest anywhere I should look?

I would be looking to carry some or all of:
  • 15.4" Macbook Pro
  • iPad
  • Kindle or paperback
  • Loose stuff (pens, wallet, iPhone)
  • Panasonic GF1
so the size of the Tom Bihn one is pretty much spot on.

Hmm, cant see anything that fits the bill with one shoulder strap that isn't spendy.

There's a Lowe Pro Slingshot 350 that has a slot for a 15 laptop but it's not that much cheaper than the one you've posted.

Well, the Tom Bihn bag is $120 for the bag, plus $30-55 for international shipping, plus excise and VAT. So the Lowe Pro is cheaper. It's quite a bit deeper than I need though, as it's sized to carry a full DSLR.

Nah, I have one of those courier style bags already. I don't like how it tends to slip off my shoulder when there's a fair bit of weight in it.

See if you can find one in a shop, larger PC worlds/Dixons/Currys carry most of the range. You never know, it might not be too big.

I'll keep my eyes open still anyway.

Silly question maybe but have you tried putting it over your head so that the strap goes across your chest?

Strap is too short. It's a stupid Airwalk bag with a fixed length strap bought by a stupid guy who didn't think about it very hard.

So basically you need a bigger strap on.

Yeah but messenger style bags can be quite bad for you when you have a laptop and stuff in them, if you carry them for any decent amount of time you can start to really hurt your shoulder and back so this one strap backpack is probably a better solution.

Get one of those chest mounted baby carrier thingies and put all your Apple Corporation goods in there, you'll be able to kiss and fondle them as you're walking along.

Oh Doc, I do have a HUGE Crumpler Messenger bag from when I had my 17" Powerbook (R.I.P.) It has a very comfy adjustable shoulder strap, excellent padding with 2 compartments and extra pockets. I can post pics (It's mostly Red with blue bits) and let you know the model when I get home if you're interested.

It was just under £100 new, yours (or anyones if the Doc passes) for £30 posted.

No, I did have a look but it's an older model. I'll post some pics and more details tonight though. It's in excellent condition.

I don't see why not. If you like the look of the bag tonight when I post pics I can get it to the post office tomorrow. Maybe bump the price up a little to cover next day delivery to be sure? I think 3 days would be ample (Tues - Fri), but it's your shout.

I'd probably give you a few quid extra for next day shipping, but let's look at the pics first. Can you weigh it too? (for the shipping calculation)

Recall that posting my tablet PC out cost me £13 more because it was 58g too heavy. I have become risk-averse on shipping weights!

Yo Doc!

This is the bag: http://toronto.en.craigslist.ca/tor/clo/1706780371.html

Got Mrs Z to read me the model a she's at home.

I'd have to charge you £5 if you want me to weigh it.

Or shall we say £35 posted with next day delivery? ;)

Getting phone pics from Mrs Z now...

Pssst. Rich.

Nobody has had one of those bags since 2001.

Why not get a proper rucksack? I've got a good North Face hiking one. It was pretty expensive for what is essentially nylon and stuff, but it's absolutely ace, would hold all of the stuff you want to put in it securely, and it distributes the weight across your back and shoulders more efficiently than one of those daft things ever could.

Which ones? The one-strap style or the messenger bag style I just bought off Zardoz?

I have a rucksack. Two straps are fiddly to put on and take off. Those one-strap bags with quick releases on the strap are much less awkward.

The one-strap ones I meant! Nothing wrong with a good messenger bag thingy. But seriously, if you're doing some proper carrying for a decent amount of time or you're on a bike or something, there's a reason you have two shoulders. But yeah the messenger bag is good as well.

Those single-strap backpacks are popular again now. All the Mac-using dual-classed designer/codemonkey types had them in San Francisco. They're a good deal more ergonomic than a backpack worn over one shoulder, which is how I wear them normally when I'm not walking somewhere.

Every backpack is a single-strap backpack. They just have two of them so you can take your pick of shoulders. That's versatility, that.
