Don't forget that any new browser is automatically much faster than one with a stored cache and history.

I've been rocking the Safari 4 beta for ages, I really like it. Much better than firefox on the mac (I would put Firefox running on a Linux machine > Safari on a mac though).

The beta had the tabs on the top of the window, chrome stylee, but they seemed to have decided against it.

Ah - didn't know you'd upgraded rather than just having it installed for the first time.

You're such a browser whore, Lave.

If your cache is slowing things down, it's not a very good cache. And I can't imagine a few megs of browser history does much either. And yes, Safari 4 imports all that from Safari 3 anyway.

Every time a page loads, it has to check every single link it remembers that you've been to before it knows what colour to paint the links. That slows it down. Cache was the wrong word. I meant exclusively the history, really.

So in browser development you don't think there's a future in history?

Citation, unless it's using a retarded data structure that should be a fast operation. A clustered b-tree index keyed from the hash of the URL or domain like a database uses would do the trick.

Cite my arse. It may not slow it down much, but clearly the more past links it has to check, times the number of links on a page, makes some difference? Have you never compared two installs of the same browser, one clean and one not? There's a world of difference. Or even just purged all history and stored files, and not noticed a speed increase?

I am confident that I can trump your 'science' with my +4 anecdotal speculative assumptions.
