One game in particular I thought might be good to try:
Quote:
Neptune’s Pride

Why it makes the list: This huge 4X strategy game is a little out of the ordinary. Instead of joining your friends for play sessions at the same time, attempting to take over the galaxy in one complete burst, Neptune’s Pride is designed to be played over a period of weeks, as everyone battles for control over every star available.

Its exceptionally slow pace encourages careful planning, strategising away from the computer screen, and striking up deals with opposing players outside of the game itself. There are so many options to consider.

That’s why Neptune’s Pride was our webgame of the year for 2010. For a sense of quite how involved this game is, try reading the diary of our one-month battle with Rock, Paper, Shotgun.

Anyone played it/ want to play it?

Potential players:
Me
Slightly Green
Mr dave
Sinister Agent
Nickachu
Trooper

I did read the RPS piece

Which is why I'm not too interested. I don't fancy some of the requirements on my life. (And also the final couple of pages show people were rather tired of the game by then)

For my money, Gridwars 2 is one of the finest freebies out there if anyone can still find a copy.

[Oh wait, you can according to Google. It's on World of ('Linda' - Ed)]

We should do a Gridwars high score challenge again like we did in the dark times.

I can't find Gridwars 2 on :attitude: 's site but I did find it on a site called Demo News. It was the third entry when I googled it.

I've been meaning to play this for ages but kept forgetting. Thanks for the reminder.

Google "Grid Wars 2" and its the first entry. But it looks like he has since amended the review to remove the download link. It was directly hosted on his site for a long while after the Geometry Wars people got heavy.

Also the remake of Head Over Heels:

http://retrospec.sgn.net/games/hoh/

I know it's a remake but dammit it's still a fine fine game. It's number 38 in our all time chart and should probably be higher IMO - http://uptojump.co.uk/?p=1121.

Neptune's Pride is a brilliant thing that I am very wary of ever playing again. It's exhausting, an only gets increasingly so the longer a game goes on. It may not help that I have a habit of being obviously not a contender for the title after a couple of days, but still making myself such a total pain in the arse to attack that I tend to survive to the end for fourth place anyway.

The same people are working on a more co-op games that's along the same lines, apparently, that addresses the "must check in at key times" problem of Neptune's Pride. I think it's called Blight of the Immortals.

Are you really sure you want to be throwing aggregation's about Doc G's lovely lady around like that?

It was up this morning as downloaded it and gave it a quick go. Ran pretty poorly on my PC still I turned the planet detail down though.

I shall edit the first post with potential players. Having said that, I am on my honeymoon for 2 weeks, so I am not really going to be able to play until then.

have just started a game with random's to see how it works, looks like it will get horribly absorbing. From what i can see though we will have to either pay to defiantly play against each other on a private galaxy or time it perfectly so we all get into the same 'free game'

Anyhow chuck my name down, also i don't mind waiting to start Bobby, get your honeymoon out the way 1st or the new ball n' chain may get upset ;)

Glad you posted this - I tried oolite a few years ago, but it didn't work for me. Seems to be running now though. When I can be arsed, I'll figure out the controls and have a play. Of it.

Herocore - pretty cool take on the Metroid power-up-skills-to-progress type of game.

Spheres of Chaos - awesome, retina-searing Asteroids game (first released on the Archimedes, dead computer fans)

L'Abbaye des Morts - Spectrum-style puzzle platformer.

Star Guard - platformer/shooter thingy.
