In this age of greenery, I don't think we should throw things away quite so willy nilly.

How about we recycle the thread and use it to describe cheeses?

Starbucks in the US do a Café Dolce Latte. I asked them if you could taste the cheese, and they looked at me like I was a proper mental.

For all the varied and wildly different cheese in the world, Cathedral City is still my favourite.

For sure, I like a well aged speciality cheese as much as the next man...

... but when i'm having me baked spud with beans and want some grated cheesiness on top, then I always fall back on a bog standard el-cheapo supermarket mild cheddar :)

Cathedral City doesn't really taste of anything, to me, but I quite like the 'Light' version, regardless. There plenty of similarly-priced cheddars with a decent enough kick to 'em, though.

Odd, I've never heard of it before I saw an advert for it on Sky News on Thursday. The nation's favourite cheese apparently. Since when?

If I'm just eating slices of cheddar - which I often do because there's no other food in the house and I'm a fat cunt - I don't want a particularly strong-tasting cheddar.

I'm kind of the opposite - I don't really care about what goes into my sandwiches, but I like something a bit more mature and tangy when I'm having it with crackers or whatever. I still don't like very strong cheeses, though, so I'm certainly not snobby about this stuff.

Gosh, it's a little bit... I don't know... staid?

I would have gone with something like

"Cheesus Christ! Would you Edam and Eve it."
or
"Tall tales about cheese, so get your Stilt(s)on"
or something...

Yes but when such threads drop down the board and you need to post in them so do a search, it helps to have the topic word in the title. Puns etc should go in the subtitle.

Pro Tip. A potato peeler is easier to use and does perfect slices as well.

I love cheese. Smelly and at room temp. With port.

Camembert baked is gorgeous and a really easy starter - just take the waxed paper off, bung it back in the box and put it in the oven for 20 mins

Now, I love a bit of strong, mature cheddar, probably as much as any other food ever invented. But that extra mature stuff that is so strong it's actually slightly crunchy... that's a bit nasty.

Ah, if I'm in the right mood (i.e. awake) I like a bit of strong cheese. It is an acquired taste, granted, but then there's cheese you scoff and cheese you savour.

Oh I love the strong flavour, but when the texture becomes gritty, that puts me off a bit.

I like cheese. I like strong cheese.

I draw the line at a runny Stinking Bishop though.

also, why does a sandwhich with grated cheese taste better than one with the same cheese sliced?

I'm sure I read an answer to that, once. It was that more of the surface area of the cheese is touching your tongue. I could be talking bollocks, mind.

I dislike grated cheese in a sandwich, solely because it falls out everywhere.

Ah....

"the finer you grate it the more surface area there is to make contact with your tongue. This makes the taste stronger. There are also other factors which can contribute to this for example when you grate the cheese more of the chemicals which cause the taste are released. Grating the cheese also exposes the more fresh cheese underneath the "skin" the part which has not been exposed to the air.

All three of these factors cause the taste to be more intense and pleasing to the taste buds."

Aye. Rubbish texture, too. I like it to feel as though there's actually a layer of something more substantial than the bread in there.

I am eating a ham and cheese sandwich, this very second.

Well not this very second, because I am typing this, this very second, but I was eating it a few seconds ago and will carry on eating it in a few seconds.

It does not contain grated cheese

If you snobs can get your tweed clobbered arses in Aldi they do a superb Isle of Man Smoked Mature cheddar.

I might have to re-evaluate my opinion of Cathedral City. I grilled some over a couple of crumpets earlier and they were utterly splendiferous.

Yeah, but football is the nation's favourite game. The X-Factor is the nation's favourite television programme; Ant & Dec its favourite people. Stella Artois out of cans is the nation's favourite tipple; getting pissed and bashing the fuck out of each other the nation's favourite pastime. The meaningless pursuit of wealth and fame is the nation's favourite life-goal, and six plastic balls are the nation's favourite gods.
