This arrived in the post today - Just having a go and I spotted one of our number among the opponents. How much do you get for a gig like that, Dimmers?

Hehe, snap! How are you getting on, Mimi? I'm going up against Great Tiger the noo. Most of the boxers I've encountered so far were in the original Punch-Out and Super Punch-Out, so I have all their moves sussed, but I'm looking forward to the new fighters on the later courses, and all the challenges and stuff. It's a pretty doss game - I'm chuffed with it! :DD

Wish it supported the classic controller, mind.

I'm awfully rubbish at the game. Craig's been playing and is fairing a lot better though - Tiger boy gave him the toughest challenge, I think, but part of that may have been the frustration of sparring partners that 'disappear' and reappear elsewhere - Seth (?) from Streetfighter is similarly irksome.

I said to Craig earlier that I thought the game was like a collection of boss battles in that each of your opponents has an established set of moves and a 'weakness', and your job is to work out and exploit that weakness with accuracy and timing. The reason I am rubbish is because I am inaccurate and have terrible timing and reactions.

Craig has got up to the Irish guy, I think. The characters are funny, even if the racial and cultural stereotyping are a bit full-on, it's all done in a fun manner, and everyone gets it equally. Rather loving the coach though, with his strange shifty looks after delivering his pearls of wisdom. :D

Hehe, yeah, this series is completely different to any other boxing one - the games really are all about memorising 'telegraphed' moves, and actively countering them where possible. The racial caricatures have been there since the beginning, too, and honestly seem more charming and knowingly daft than dodgy, to me.

Whenever a character seems to charge at you with a unique signature move, it's always a good idea to try and punch him just as he's about to land it (instead of trying to avoid the blow). For most of the characters on the minor and major circuits, this results in an instant knock-down.

Yes I can imagine an Edge columnist casting a slack jawed stare to his colleague and mouthing the words "No Indians worked on this game".

It is enjoyable and I am having a lot of fun so far. I hope the game has enough legs though.

Aye, if you're already a fan, go for it. Can't go wrong, like. A lot of the boxers are from previous games, but you should still get plenty of life out of it.

Controls are the same as the NES game's, unless you choose the 'Wii remote + nunchuck' option, which lets you throw the punches yourself and dodge with the analogue stick. You can also use the balance board for dodging, although I've heard this isn't always as responsive as it needs to be. There's no classic controller support, sadly, but you won't really find yourself pining for it anyway.

I'm finding that the real meat of the game - and all of its imaginative flair - comes after you've finished finished the three main circuits, so keep playing, folks!
