I believe what you need to do is go into Administrative Tools and then Computer Management ( I think it's called) and then the Disk Drive section.
You will probably see your old drive there, but without a drive letter assigned. What you'll probably have to do, just once, is right click and select an option that says something like 'Import foreign drive', or something like that.
Sorry for the vagueness of those instructions, but that's what you need to do I think. You won't need to (and should not) format the drive first to make it work, you should be able to import/mount it via there.
