I thought the plural was just Mr Chris like "fish" or "sheep", the collective noun is "cardigan".

"Oh look, a Cardigan of Mr Chris are wrongulating towards us."

Yeah, that works.

Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Depressing, really. I know I don't 'feel' too concerned about missing Teletext, but I've been reading it and its predecessor Oracle since I was in primary school (Oracle kids' page in that case), and it's been an unchanged technological medium when so much else has come and gone around it. Err, kind of like CDs, then.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand it's gone.

*sniff*

I didn't even think of tuning into it last night to see if it had any special goodbye screens a la Oracle around New Year 92/93. Anyone saved any screens anywhere on the web?

Dunno whom exactly has saved screengrabs, but I bet someone somewhere would have.

Wasn't much of a goodbye, to be honest, at least on Channel 4 Teletext. Nothing like the drawn-out Oracle farewell, which I also remember. Was just a few pages mentioning that the Teletext service was closing, a page with some teletext graphics from the past and a re-run of a random Turner the Worm story(!) and nothing much more. Really was an anticlimax.

Oracle actually slowly deleted all the pages up to midnight so all you were left with was the index.

I had a teletext adaptor for my CPC as in those days few TV's had the service. You could even download games sometimes from the software pages. However they rarely worked as error correction on teletext was non existent!

You're not kidding. We never had teletext when I was a kid, so when I got my first job, I bought an ex-rental from Rumbelows with FASTEXT (fasttext?)! Through my weedy set top aerial, you were lucky if you could understand even the clock in the top right :)

Just flicking through the radio listings and saw this for 9pm on Christmas Day over on Radio 4:

Ceefax Strikes Back... with Count Binface

Probably won't catch it live but sounds interesting. Will have to see if it can live up to the premise, but always good when the intergalatic space warrior blesses us with a visitation.

And yes, I did dig up the smouldering corpse of a 15 year thread full of ghosts rather than post this in the podcast thread.

Better start doing your screen grabs of BEEX now, so you can enjoy them in the privacy of your own home.

And in years to come, you'll be able to show your grandkids what social media could be like, before it got banned in the big Online Safety Debacle of 2024/5.
